BIOGRAPHY

Gaz first came to wider public attention as the original drummer in the Matthew Halsall Band and featured heavily on the early recordings of the Gondwana label. A particular highlight was recording the album “On The GO”, which won THE BEST JAZZ ALBUM OF THE YEAR – Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards, 2012 and was nominated Best Jazz Album MOBO Awards, 2011.

“Incredible” – Ginger Baker

Gaz has continued to perform and record with many artists and his resume reads like a who’s who of British Jazz. In 2019, Gaz was voted 5th Place – BRITISH JAZZ AWARDS, in 2020 Gaz released his first album as a band leader which was supported by a huge UK tour and extensive radio play. Most recently, Gaz has become an endorser for the Canopus drum company. Gaz has also recorded a new trio album “Beboperation” which is being released on the 6th May 2022 and he is planning to tour again in 2023.

“An extremely tasteful and swinging straight ahead drummer, Hughes exhibits a no nonsense approach to his playing” – www.jazzviews.net

As well as his love for Jazz music, Gaz also performs and records with many Pop and Rock artists including; Patti Boulaye, Suzi Quatro, Ray Quinn (X Factor), Rick Guard (Platinum selling artist and musical writer), Kristyna Myles (Mobo nominated artist). Gaz is the first call drummer for a few studios around the Northwest UK. He records for signed and unsigned artists as well as commercial projects.

The new album features Andrzej Baranek (Piano) and Ed Harrison (Double Bass). They worked together on Gaz’s “Plays Art Blakey” album and tour. The opportunity to play every night helped the three musicians form a tight bond and it felt like a natural decision for the trio to have a creative outlet of its own.

Gaz loves arranging music for ensembles. He has enjoyed bringing new ideas to the Piano trio format and working collaboratively with the group. Gaz also wanted to showcase his melodic drumming concept. For years he has been delighting audiences by tuning his drums to specific pitches and quoting the heads of tunes during solos. This album is the first time he has arranged and recorded music for this concept.

The album will be released on the 6th May 2022. It will initially be available digitally and a limited run of physical copies will be produced.

THE RECORDING

The session was recorded on 11th – 12th July 2018 at Low Four Studios, Manchester with Brendan Williams.

Low Four is based in the Old Granada studios and is steeped in history and was a major part of the Manchester music scene from the 1960’s onwards. Brendan now runs the studio and has worked with Gaz many times over the years and Gaz felt he was the obvious choice when considering his debut album.
